Nearby and your data

Using your AI memory to meet people only works if you trust what happens to it. This page lists what Nearby collects, what it shares, and how to stop all of it.

Available on: web, iOS, Android.

Location

  • Your device reads your precise position so the map can center on you.
  • Before anything is sent, the coordinates are rounded to about one kilometer. Other people see your approximate area, never where you are standing.
  • Location is shared only while Anuma is open and you are in Public mode. In Private mode nothing is sent.
  • Meetup venues are the exception: a venue you pick for a meetup is shown exactly, because people need to find it.

Your profile

Name, age, photos, bio, interests, the optional fields under More about you, astrology, the images you generate, and the meetups you join are visible to people nearby while you are in Public mode. Your birthdate, your phone number and your email are not.

Memories

  • A memory is used by Nearby only when its Share in Nearby switch is on. In Public mode (eye open) new memories Anuma saves from your chats start with the switch on; in Private mode they start off. You can change any memory’s switch from your memories list.
  • A shared memory is sent in readable form to the Nearby service, where it passes moderation and is indexed so Anuma can find themes you have in common with others.
  • Private memories never leave your device for Nearby.
  • Other people never see your memories. They see shared interests and a vibe check written from themes both of you shared.

See Memory and Nearby.

Chats

Your conversations with Anuma are never shown on your profile or sent to Nearby as text. What can reach Nearby is the memories Anuma keeps from them (subject to the switch above) and, in Public mode, images you generate. Direct messages on Nearby are encrypted in transit and at rest. They are not end-to-end encrypted, so Anuma and its service providers can access them for operation, safety and legal compliance.

Phone number

Your number is verified once to confirm you are a real person. It is not shown to anyone.

Turn it off

  • Private mode (the eye icon) takes you off the map, stops your profile from being used, and stops location sharing. Your profile is kept so you can come back.
  • Share in Nearby off on a memory removes it from matching immediately.
  • Delete your account removes your Nearby profile, messages and meetups with everything else. See Delete your account.

The policy

The full terms are in the Privacy Policy  (effective September 28, 2026). The sections on People Nearby, location, maps and meetups describe the same practices as this page. If they ever differ, the policy wins.
